In general, members of the public don’t get the chance to drive a tank, not least because they are hugely impractical for the school run or picking up a pint of milk from the local shops. However, there is nothing quite like sitting at the controls of a super tough military vehicle and the course that you will be tackling gives you chance to put this tank through its paces and find out just what it can do. You’ll learn how to navigate using a periscope and your instructor will guide you through the process of driving with no peripheral vision. The day begins with an introduction and a safety briefing from instructors who will tell you everything you need to know aboutthe tank and its controls.
Tank Driving Quick-Facts
- Some experiences entail driving a heavily armoured tank and firing rounds of paintballs at your opponent from a specially modified cannon. You'll need shrewd battlefield tactics and all the tank driving skills you can muster as you take on your foe for a tank paintballing battle to the death.
- The history of the tank began in World War I, when armoured all-terrain fighting vehicles were first deployed as a response to the problems of trench warfare, ushering in a new era of mechanized warfare. Though initially crude and unreliable, tanks eventually became a mainstay of ground armies. By World War II, tank design had advanced significantly, and tanks were used in quantity in all land theatres of the war. The Cold War saw the rise of modern tank doctrine and the rise of the general-purpose main battle tank. The tank still provides the backbone to land combat operations in the 21st century.
